Amorim confirms bad news on Bruno Fernandes and 4 others ahead of Wolves clash
The injury crisis is headlined by Bruno Fernandes, who sustained a hamstring injury during the recent defeat to Aston Villa. Initial medical reports suggested the Portuguese playmaker would be sidelined for approximately 1 month, with a return expected in late January.
Despite rumors in the British media that Fernandes was pushing for a miraculous recovery to feature on the bench tonight, Amorim quickly dismissed those claims.
“Bruno was already saying that he needs to train, but we don’t know,” Amorim told the press. “No chance he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can write that.”
The absence of such a creative force is a devastating blow to United’s attacking fluidity and Amorim’s tactical setup. The 40-year-old coach has openly admitted that Fernandes is an irreplaceable figure, both for his technical output and his psychological influence.
Highlighting his leadership, Amorim added: “He’s always speaking. That’s why he’s the captain. Every time he makes recovery from the previous game, he is the guy that is going to watch the other guys training... I don’t know if he wants my job or not, but he’s a leader.”
Unfortunately, the list of absentees does not end with the captain. United entered the Newcastle game without center-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, as well as young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. While fans hoped for their return tonight, Amorim provided a grim update: “I think Kobbie Mainoo is not going to be ready. Bruno is not going to be ready. I think Matt (De Ligt) is not going to be ready. Harry is not going to be ready.”
The situation could worsen as Mason Mount, who limped off during the Newcastle win, remains a major doubt. Regarding Mount's availability, the coach noted: “I don’t know how Mase is going to be for that game.”
With the additional departure of Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui for AFCON 2025, United could be missing up to 8 senior players. Consequently, Amorim is likely to retain the lineup used against Newcastle, featuring Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro in midfield, while Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, and Ayden Heaven anchor the defense.
However, a silver lining remains for the Red Devils: they face a Wolves side currently enduring a historic slump. Wolves sit at the bottom of the Premier League table, failing to win a single match in 18 rounds. With 16 defeats and only two points, they are 16 points away from safety, making them the ideal opponent for a wounded Man United side to close out the year with a victory.
