Champions League 2025/26 round-up: Arsenal and Bayern Munich seal knock-out places; four teams crash out early

After seven intense matchdays in the new Champions League League Phase, the landscape of European football has become clear, as elite powerhouses secure their future while several struggling sides officially bid farewell to the competition.

The leaders

At the summit of the table, Arsenal and Bayern Munich have become the first 2 teams to mathematically secure their places in the Round of 16. Arsenal, under the meticulous guidance of Mikel Arteta, remains the only team in the competition to maintain a perfect record. Their latest statement of intent was a convincing 3-1 victory over Inter Milan, bringing their total to 21 points.

Arsenal have yet to drop a single point in this season’s Champions League.

This achievement marks a historic milestone for the North London club, as it is the first time the "Gunners" have ever recorded 7 consecutive wins in the Champions League. Their path to perfection has been no easy feat, featuring victories over continental giants such as Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, and Athletic Bilbao. Statistically, Arsenal reigns supreme as both the highest-scoring team and the most disciplined defense in the tournament so far.

Joining them in the knockout stage is Bayern Munich, who secured their progression on Wednesday night. The German giants eased to a 2-0 win against Union Saint-Gilloise, fueled by a clinical brace from star striker Harry Kane. Bayern has won 6 out of their 7 matches, with their only blemish being a narrow defeat to the aforementioned Arsenal.

The chasing pack

Following closely behind, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Tottenham are in a strong position to claim the remaining automatic qualification spots. With favorable fixtures in the final matchday and a solid points cushion, these three historical heavyweights look set to avoid the stress of the play-off round.

In contrast, the situation is becoming increasingly desperate for Paris Saint-Germain. The reigning French champions suffered a disastrous defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the seventh round, a result that stripped them of their ability to control their own destiny.

Defending champions PSG slip up before the final matchday.

To make matters worse, Luis Enrique’s men must face a resurgent Newcastle United in the final game. The "Magpies" are currently breathing down PSG's neck, sitting just behind them on goal difference, making their upcoming clash a literal "winner-takes-all" battle for survival.

A ferocious race for the top 8

The battle for the remaining top-eight spots is incredibly tight. Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Juventus are all locked in a fierce points deadlock. For these clubs, a victory in the final round is not just a group, it is a mandatory requirement to keep their hopes of direct Round of 16 qualification alive.

Heartbreak for the eliminated four

While the elite fight for glory, 4 clubs have already seen their Champions League journey end: Kairat Almaty, Villarreal, Slavia Prague, and Eintracht Frankfurt.

The journey for Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty was always expected to be difficult. Facing a brutal schedule against Real Madrid and Inter Milan, Rafael Urazbakhtin’s side managed only a single point from a draw against Pafos. Their defensive struggles were evident, conceding 19 goals while scoring only 5.

Similarly, Villarreal has provided the biggest shock of the season. Despite sitting 3rd in La Liga, the Spanish side seemed to lose their fighting spirit on the European stage, suffering six defeats and gaining only one point. Slavia Prague followed a similar path, finishing 34th with just three points from 3 draws.

Villarreal have been a major disappointment in this season’s Champions League.

The most surprising exit, however, belongs to Eintracht Frankfurt. The Bundesliga side, rich in European tradition, picked up only 4 points in 7 games. This poor run led to the immediate sacking of head coach Dino Toppmoller following a series of lackluster performances.

As we head into the final matchday, the pressure is mounting on Ajax, Union SG, Pafos, Benfica, and Bodo/Glimt. With only 6 points from 7 games, these clubs are no longer dreaming of the top eight; they are fighting desperately just to secure a spot in the knockout play-offs.
