Chelsea hold Man City in thriller, hand Arsenal boost in title race
Chelsea traveled to Manchester in a state of high uncertainty. Following a poor run of 3 matches without a win and the abrupt New Year's Eve departure of manager Enzo Maresca, the London side appeared vulnerable. Under interim coach Calum McFarlane, who had never led a senior game, Chelsea looked like underdogs against the reigning champions.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola welcomed back Rodri for his first Premier League start in 3 months, while Tijanni Reijnders and young Nico O’Reilly were tasked with controlling the midfield.
Chelsea, missing the suspended Moises Caicedo and injured Robert Sanchez, handed a start to goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and shifted captain Reece James into a defensive midfield role to provide stability.
The match began with City dominating possession, yet Chelsea’s compact low block frustrated the hosts. On 37 minutes, Erling Haaland saw a deflected effort tipped wide by Jorgensen. Moments later, the Norwegian striker struck the inside of the post, signaling City’s growing pressure.
The deadlock finally broke in the 43rd minute. Following a poor clearance from Benoit Badiashile, Reijnders showed brilliant footwork to evade the defender and fire a powerful shot into the near post.
In the second half, City pushed to double their lead but failed to be decisive. Statistics showed City held over 65% possession and registered 18 shots, but they could not find a second goal. This lack of clinical finishing proved costly.
In the 91st minute, after sustained pressure from substitute Liam Delap and Pedro Neto, Enzo Fernandez pounced on a loose ball. After his first two attempts were blocked, he finally stabbed the ball home, sparking wild celebrations in the away end.
This result is a significant blow for Man City. With only 2 points from their last 2 games, Guardiola’s men now sit 6 points behind leaders Arsenal. Furthermore, City has been caught by Aston Villa, with both teams now tied on 42 points after 20 matches.
For Chelsea, while they remain winless in 4 league games, this performance restores much-needed morale at Stamford Bridge. With Liverpool also dropping points in a 2-2 draw against Fulham, Chelsea remains in a strong position to challenge for the top 5.
Looking ahead, Man City will continue to play in the Etihad with Brighton on January 7. Meanwhile, Chelsea faces a crucial West London derby against Fulham this Wednesday, where they hope to maintain this newfound momentum.
