Estevao set to miss Chelsea’s clash with Newcastle due to a minor muscle injury
Chelsea booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Cardiff City. They secured the win thanks to a brace from Alejandro Garnacho and a goal from Pedro Neto.
Estêvão Willian was expected to start after making just one substitute appearance across the previous two matches. However, the Brazil international was suprisingly absent from the squad, with Maresca later confirming that the 18-year-old is dealing with an injury problem.
Speaking to Football London after the match, Enzo Maresca confirmed Estêvão would also miss Saturday's Premier League fixture at Newcastle United. He said:
“Estêvão has a small muscular problem, a light injury. He won’t be available for Newcastle but we will see for the next one. I think he can be available for the next one.”
Estêvão’s absence was felt, with Maresca opting to start Tyrique George on the right wing in his place. However, the Cobham Academy graduate struggled to make an impact and was later replaced by Pedro Neto, who went on to score a crucial goal. The Portuguese forward is expected to keep his place in the starting XI this weekend.
Since mid-August, Estêvão has made 10 starts and 11 appearances off the bench, featuring far more often than many expected. Despite establishing himself as an important player at Stamford Bridge, a period of rest was always likely to come at some point.
Maresca has faced criticism over how he has managed Estêvão’s minutes. While the Italian is taking a cautious approach to the youngster’s development, some fans are eager to see their starlet on the pitch more often.
