Guardiola confirms 2 Man City injury blows after draw with Sunderland
The match itself was a story of dominance without a clinical edge. Man City controlled the tempo for vast periods, camping in the final third, yet they found it impossible to breach a resilient Sunderland defense.
Despite creating numerous high-quality openings in the six-yard box, the Citizens lacked the finishing touch required to secure all three points, eventually settling for a 0-0 draw that halted their eight-game winning streak.
A major talking point was the performance of Savinho, who made his first Premier League start in over 2 months. Unfortunately, the Brazilian winger endured a night to forget, failing to make an impact on the right flank and missing 2 golden opportunities to put City ahead. His disappointing evening ended prematurely in the 51st minute when he was forced off with a physical problem.
After the game, Guardiola delivered a bleak update on the 21-year-old’s condition, stating: “Savinho, it doesn’t look good, I would say.”
The injury concerns did not stop there, as Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez was also withdrawn at half-time due to a knock. While the situation looked concerning, Guardiola remained cautious about the extent of the damage, simply noting: “And Nico, we’ll see.”
However, it was not all bad news for “The Citizens”. The second half marked the long-awaited return of Rodri, who had been sidelined for over two months. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner replaced Gonzalez at the break and immediately brought composure to the midfield.
Guardiola was full of praise for his captain’s impact, saying: “He changed the game. He proved in 45 minutes that in that position, he’s the best. We struggled in the first half but with Rodri we struggled less. We broke the lines and were more fluid.”
And, despite falling 4 points behind Arsenal, Guardiola refused to criticize his players, instead focusing on the quality of their performance. “I’m so proud and delighted at the way we played in a difficult stadium against difficult opponents. We did everything to win but in the end we could not win it,” the manager explained.
City must now recover quickly. They have just 3 days of rest before returning to the Etihad Stadium to face Chelsea. The London club is currently in a state of crisis following the departure of Enzo Maresca, having managed only 1 victory in their last 7 outings.
