Hincapie and Martinelli injured, Arsenal face a defensive crisis

Arsenal’s victory over Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup has been overshadowed by a growing injury crisis. Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed 2 significant fitness blows during his post-match press conference, creating a major selection headache as the Gunners prepare for a crucial Premier League fixture against Brighton at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal secured their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the second consecutive season following a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Crystal Palace. After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, where Palace defender Maxence Lacroix scored an own goal before Marc Guehi equalized, the match moved to spot-kicks.

The Gunners showed immense composure, converting all their penalties, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga became the hero by saving Lacroix’s decisive effort to secure a 8-7 shootout win.

However, the celebrations were short-lived as Arsenal’s medical room continued to fill up. The most immediate concern involves Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli. The 24-year-old was forced off in the 59th minute, looking in visible discomfort after picking up a knock. He was eventually replaced by Leandro Trossard as he could no longer maintain his intensity on the flank.

Addressing the media after the game, Arteta expressed his concern regarding the winger’s status. "Martinelli could not carry on, so we had to make the sub," the Spaniard explained. "He wasn't comfortable continuing after the second half."

While the club has yet to release an official medical report, the timing is disastrous. With only 3 days remaining before Arsenal host Brighton in the Premier League, the chances of the number 11 recovering in time appear slim.

Adding to Arteta’s headache is the absence of summer signing Piero Hincapie. The Ecuadorian international was not included in the matchday squad against Palace, though he was spotted in the stands supporting his teammates. Reports from the British media suggest Hincapie suffered a shoulder injury following a heavy collision with teammate Riccardo Calafiori during last weekend’s win over Everton.

And Arteta directly confirmed the severity of the situation during his press briefing, stating, "With Piero, yeah, it is something different because he picked up an injury against Everton."

Hincapie's problem forces Arsenal into a defensive crisis.

This loss is particularly painful for the North London club. While Trossard or Eberechi Eze can cover for Martinelli, the defensive situation is far more fragile.

With Gabriel Magalhaes, Cristhian Mosquera, and Ben White all still sidelined, Hincapie’s absence leaves the backline depleted. If he fails to recover, Arteta will likely be forced to rely on the same back four that finished against Palace: Jurrien Timber, William Saliba, Riccardo Calafiori, and Myles Lewis-Skelly. This is a risky gamble, especially considering Hincapie’s reliability, having already made 12 appearances across all competitions this season.

Despite these defensive vulnerabilities, Arsenal can find some comfort in Brighton’s current form. The Seagulls are struggling, having failed to win any of their last 4 Premier League matches, and currently sit 9th in the table.
