Kylian Mbappe brace sends Real Madrid top of La Liga
The "Arbeloa Era" at the Santiago Bernabeu is rapidly gaining momentum. Just 3 days before the clash at El Madrigal, Real Madrid delivered a masterclass in the Champions League, dismantling AS Monaco 6-1.
In that fixture, Vinicius produced his finest performance of the season, earning the "Player of the Match" award after recording a hat-trick of assists and a clinical goal. Not to be outdone, Mbappe maintained his elite standards by netting a brace, setting the stage for their domestic encounter 4 days later.
In the Saturday showdown against Villarreal, Arbeloa opted for continuity. The starting XI remained largely unchanged from the midweek European triumph, featuring the midfield engine of Arda Guler and the veteran presence of Thibaut Courtois. In contrast, Villarreal manager Marcelino faced a defensive crisis, as Juan Foyth was forced to limp off early in the first half, disrupting the hosts' tactical shape.
The match at the Estadio de la Ceramica began with high intensity but few clear-cut openings. Villarreal’s Georges Mikautadze went close with a volley, while Pape Gueye, fresh from leading Senegal to AFCON glory, narrowly missed the target just before the interval.
However, the deadlock was broken only 2 minutes into the second half. Vinicius ignited a lightning-fast counter-attack, driving into the box from the left. His low cross was deflected by Gueye, but Mbappe was the fastest to react, poking the ball home at the near post to make it 1-0.
The second half was marked by physical tension and tactical fouls. Villarreal’s Alfonso Pedraza and Madrid’s midfield enforcers were involved in several heated exchanges, leading to a flurry of yellow cards.
As the "Yellow Submarine" pushed for an equalizer, veteran Gerard Moreno missed a golden opportunity by firing over the bar. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, the drama peaked when Pedraza clumsily fouled Mbappe in the area. The Frenchman stepped up and converted a "Panenka" penalty to seal the 2-0 win.
With this brace, Kylian Mbappe has now reached 21 La Liga goals this season, accounting for nearly 45% of Real Madrid’s total league output. Meanwhile, Vinicius has undergone a total transformation since the departure of Xabi Alonso. In just his last 2 appearances under Arbeloa, the Brazilian has been directly involved in 5 goals (1 goal and 4 assists), proving he is once again the world’s most dangerous winger.
In the post-match press conference, Arbeloa was full of praise for his attacking stars.
"They are the best players in the world," the coach told reporters. "With Vini on the outside and Kylian finding space, we are lucky to have them. Their effort and solidarity are being rewarded with goals."
This vital victory moves Real Madrid to 51 points after 21 matches, putting them two points clear of Barcelona, who face Real Oviedo later today. For Villarreal, the defeat is a massive blow, leaving them 10 points adrift of the leaders.
