Man United consider £100m move for Baleba in January
According to recent updates from Sky Sports, Man United are internally intensifying their efforts to sign Baleba this month. Although head coach Amorim has publicly played down expectations for January signings, sources suggest he is privately urging the board to invest.
The need for reinforcements has become critical following a recent injury to captain Bruno Fernandes, who is expected to be sidelined for a month. While Casemiro has shown glimpses of a resurgence, his advancing age has prevented him from completing a full 90 minutes in most matches this season.
Furthermore, Amorim reportedly lacks full confidence in backup options like Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte for his specific high-intensity system.
Reports indicate that Amorim has shortlisted 3 standout Premier League midfielders: Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Elliott Anderson. Among them, Baleba is considered the "dream" signing.
United were heavily linked with the Cameroon international last summer, but the deal collapsed when they refused to meet Brighton’s staggering £100 million asking price. However, Sky Sports confirms that the Red Devils have not "waved the white flag" and are seriously considering a mid-season move to address their midfield fragility.
Born in 2004, the soon-to-be 21-year-old is regarded as one of the most promising defensive prospects in Europe. His immense physical presence and ball-winning capabilities make him a perfect fit for the anchor role in Amorim’s tactical setup.
Baleba is viewed as the natural successor to Casemiro, who is nearing the end of his career and is likely to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer. Statistically, Baleba has been vital for Brighton this season, making 19 appearances with 16 starts, proving his readiness for the elite level.
The player himself appears ready for a significant step up. Following United’s interest last summer, Baleba reportedly held direct talks with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler regarding his future. While he remains professional, the lure of a move to Manchester is undeniable.
To overcome the £100 million price tag, United are reportedly exploring creative payment structures and performance-based installments to ease the financial pressure on their budget.
Beyond the pursuit of Baleba, Man United are active on several other fronts. The club is closely monitoring Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to provide competition up front, as well as Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet and RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.
