Manchester United receive a surprise 500 million USD “Christmas gift'
The proposed deal, worth $500 million over 5 years, would become the second-largest sponsorship agreement in Man United's history, trailing only the iconic Chevrolet shirt deal. Zilliacus intends to provide this funding through his investment group, XXI Century Capital.
Regarding the offer, the 69-year-old businessman stated: "I have decided to offer Man United a sponsorship deal through my group, XXI Century Capital. I want to give a Christmas gift to United. For me, it is not about owning something or having a trophy to brag about. It is about how United becomes financially strong so they can be the number one club, not just in England but in Europe."
This massive financial injection comes at a critical time for Man United. In recent years, the club has struggled with significant short-term and long-term debts, leading to a period of "belt-tightening."
Under current co-ownership, the club has had to cut hundreds of staff positions and reduce annual expenses to balance the books. Consequently, Zilliacus’s proposal acts like a "refreshing rain" during a drought.
Notably, Zilliacus’s motivation stems from a deep-rooted passion for the club rather than a desire for personal glory.
Indeed, Zilliacus is a familiar name to United supporters. Two years ago, he was a key contender in the race to buy the club. While Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS eventually secured a 28% stake and sporting control, Zilliacus had proposed a unique model focused on fan ownership.
Despite being rejected by the Glazers at the time, his desire to collaborate remains strong. He previously reached out to Ratcliffe, suggesting a partnership to avoid inflating the price for the Glazers' benefit.
"My love for the team remains intact. I would dearly love to work with Sir Jim Ratcliffe. When Jim Ratcliffe, Sheikh Jassim, and I were bidding for United, I said instead of just trying to outbid each other and make the Glazer family richer, why don't we work together for the benefit of the club?”, he said.
Born in Helsinki, Zilliacus is a highly successful entrepreneur who built his wealth through leadership roles, notably as the former Global Head of Corporate Communications and CEO of Southeast Asia for Nokia.
Currently based in Singapore, he manages XXI Century Capital. His expertise extends deep into sports management; he served as the chairman of Helsinki Jalkapalloklubi (1982-1986), owned the Jokerit ice hockey team, and managed Singapore’s Geylang International FC.
