Michael Carrick demands Man United keep Harry Maguire despite transfer talk

Despite having only 6 months left on his current deal, Harry Maguire is expected to remain at Manchester United beyond the January window as the club rejects interest from several major European sides.

The future of several key players at Old Trafford has come under intense scrutiny following another major shift in the dugout.

Last week, the club made the bold decision to sack Ruben Amorim, paving the way for club legend Michael Carrick to return as interim head coach. This transition has fueled rumors regarding the departures of high-profile stars, including captain Bruno Fernandes and veteran defender Harry Maguire.

The situation surrounding Maguire is particularly urgent. The 32-year-old’s contract is set to expire in June, and there have been no positive signs regarding an extension. Man United faces a difficult dilemma: they must find a solution quickly or risk losing a player they famously signed for £80 million 7 years ago for absolutely nothing.

According to reports in the English press, Serie A giants such as AC Milan and Napoli have placed the England international on their radar. However, The Sun suggests that United intends to reject all January offers.

New boss Michael Carrick highly values Maguire’s vast experience and believes his presence is vital for the second half of the season. Carrick reportedly hopes Maguire will stay not only to compete but also to mentor emerging young defenders like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.

Despite this short-term stance, the long-term picture remains blurry. It is still unclear if the Red Devils will offer a new deal or simply let him walk as a free agent this summer. While there were reports of productive talks back in October, negotiations have since frozen. The departure of Amorim, who was a vocal admirer of Maguire’s professionalism, has only added to the uncertainty.

Fitness also remains a significant concern as Maguire approaches his 33rd birthday this March. The veteran has struggled to maintain a consistent run in the team, missing 10 of United’s 21 Premier League fixtures this season due to injury. He only recently made his return to action as a substitute for Lisandro Martinez during the FA Cup loss to Brighton last weekend.

Since arriving from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 as the world’s most expensive defender, Maguire has been a polarizing but prominent figure. He has made 256 appearances for the club across all competitions, contributing 17 goals and 9 assists.

During his tenure, he played a role in helping the team secure both the Carabao Cup (2023) and the FA Cup (2024) under former manager Erik ten Hag.
