Oliver Glasner leads race to replace Ruben Amorim at Manchester United
Following the official announcement of Amorim's departure, Man United confirmed on their official website that Under-18s coach Fletcher will take interim charge. Fletcher is set to lead the team for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley and the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton. This temporary arrangement provides the board with a crucial window to finalize a successor for the "hot seat" at Old Trafford.
The hunt for a permanent replacement has accelerated rapidly, as the club's leadership expects the new manager to secure a top-four finish during the second half of the season. According to a recent report from The Telegraph, the search has taken an unexpected turn. While rumors previously linked Sir Gareth Southgate to the job, sources now indicate that Glasner and De Zerbi have emerged as the primary candidates.
Among the two, Glasner is currently viewed as the more attainable target. The 51-year-old Austrian strategist has only 6 months remaining on his contract with Crystal Palace and is reportedly hesitant to renew, citing a lack of ambition at Selhurst Park.
United’s hierarchy is highly impressed by Glasner’s Premier League experience, particularly his success in winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield. Furthermore, Glasner frequently utilizes a three-back system, which aligns perfectly with the squad transition started by Amorim. This tactical continuity suggests that Glasner could integrate into the current setup with minimal disruption.
However, a faction within the United board remains enamored with De Zerbi. The Italian manager became a Premier League sensation during his tenure at Brighton between 2022 and 2024, known for his "firepower" attacking philosophy.
While his style matches the club's long-term vision, securing his services is complicated. The 46-year-old is currently committed to a long-term project at Marseille, where he enjoys the full backing of the French club’s management.
As the dilemma continues, The Telegraph also suggests that United might repeat their 2021/22 strategy following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking. If a top-tier permanent manager cannot be secured immediately, the "Red Devils" may appoint an interim coach until the summer.
In this scenario, the club will prioritize figures who understand United’s traditions to stabilize the dressing room. Potential short-term options include a sensational return for Solskjaer, who is currently a free agent after leaving Besiktas, or former midfielder Michael Carrick.
