Real Madrid’s best defenders of all time: Sergio Ramos among the greatest
A strong defence has always been the backbone of successful teams, providing the stability needed for the attack to flourish. Over the years, Real Madrid have been home to a number of outstanding defenders who not only excelled at the back but also made important contributions in the opposition’s penalty area.
In this article, Soccer24 presents a list of the Real Madrid’s 5 best defenders of all time. The ranking is, of course, subjective, as every supporter may have a different view on which legends deserve a place.
Real Madrid’s best defenders of all time
5. Jacinto Quincoces
Born in 1905, Jacinto Quincoces is widely regarded as one of the finest defenders of the pre war era in Spanish football. During the 1930s, long before the era of the modern Galácticos, he formed a crucial part of the Real Madrid side that helped establish the club’s early reputation.
While playing for Madrid, Quincoces won two La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies, becoming a key figure in the team’s defensive line. His reputation also grew on the international stage. At the 1934 World Cup in Italy, he delivered a series of outstanding performances and was recognised as the tournament’s best defender.
After retiring from playing, Quincoces moved into management. In 1946, he guided Real Madrid to the Copa del Rey title, bringing an end to the club’s lengthy wait for silverware.
4. Manuel Sanchis Hontiyuelo
Manuel Sanchís Hontiyuelo followed in the footsteps of his father, Manuel Sanchís Martínez, another legendary figure in Real Madrid’s history. Spending his entire 18 year professional career at the Santiago Bernabéu, he became the definition of a true one club man and an important link between the romantic football of the 1980s and the later Galáctico era.
During his time with the club, Sanchís built an impressive trophy collection, winning eight La Liga titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, two UEFA Cups and two Copa del Rey titles. Known for his intelligence on the pitch, he was a defender who read the game exceptionally well and often anticipated danger before it developed.
Moreover, Sanchís and his father share a unique place in European football history, as they are among the rare father and son duos to both lift the European Cup with the same club, Real Madrid.
3. Fernando Hierro
Fernando Hierro is widely regarded as one of Spain’s greatest defenders. Despite primarily playing as a centre back or defensive midfielder, he was also known for his remarkable scoring ability and was, for a time, Spain’s all time leading scorer.
Hierro joined Real Madrid from Real Valladolid in 1989 and went on to spend 14 successful seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu. During that period, he won three Champions League titles, five La Liga trophies, one Copa del Rey and two Intercontinental Cups.
At international level, he earned 89 caps and scored 29 goals for Spain, an impressive record for a player in his position. However, his departure from Madrid remains one of the club’s most debated decisions. In 2003, just a day after winning the La Liga title, Real Madrid
announced that both Hierro and manager Vicente del Bosque would not have their contracts renewed.
2. Jose Santamaria
José Santamaría is the only non Spanish player on this list. Born in Uruguay, he was a key member of Real Madrid’s dominant side during the late 1950s. While stars such as Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás often attracted the headlines with their goals, Santamaría provided the defensive stability that held the team together.
He spent an 18 year professional career with Nacional and Real Madrid, winning a combined total of 17 major trophies. At Madrid, he made 337 official appearances, an impressive figure for a foreign player at a time when squads were smaller and rotation was rare. During that period, he also helped the club secure four European Cup titles.
On the international stage, Santamaría represented two countries. He first played for Uruguay at the 1954 World Cup before later appearing for Spain at the 1962 tournament.
1. Sergio Ramos
Sergio Ramos fully deserves the top place on this list. More than just a defender, he symbolised an entire era of Madridismo with his fierce leadership, technical quality and remarkable ability to score at crucial moments.
During his time at Real Madrid, Ramos won 22 major trophies, including four Champions League titles, five La Liga crowns, two Copa del Rey trophies and four Club World Cups. On the international stage, he also enjoyed a historic career with Spain, earning 180 caps, a national record, and playing a key role in the country’s 2010 World Cup triumph.
Perhaps his most iconic moment came in the 2014 Champions League final against Atlético Madrid. In the 93rd minute, Ramos rose to head in the equaliser that kept Madrid’s hopes alive. The goal ultimately paved the way for La Décima and ended the club’s 12 year wait for another European crown
