Reasons behind Enzo Maresca skipping press conference after Chelsea’s frustrating draw
The encounter at Stamford Bridge was a frantic affair that saw all 4 goals scored in a chaotic first half. Bournemouth stunned the home crowd early when David Brooks bundled the ball over the line in the sixth minute.
Chelsea responded through a Cole Palmer penalty after Estêvão was fouled, and they briefly took the lead when Enzo Fernández fired a brilliant strike into the top corner. However, the Blues’ defensive frailties resurfaced before halftime, allowing Justin Kluivert to capitalize on an undelayed long throw to equalize.
This result marks a deeply concerning period for the West London club, who have now managed only 1 victory in their last 7 Premier League outings. This slump in form has severely dented their ambitions for a Champions League spot, as they continue to drop points in winnable home fixtures.
Adding to the uneasy atmosphere, Maresca was a notable absentee from the post-match briefings. His assistant, Willy Caballero, stepped in and explained that the manager had been battling health issues.
Caballero revealed the severity of the situation, stating: "He didn't feel well in the last two days. He had a temperature two days ago. After the game, he went to the changing room and he asked me to replace him because he didn't feel well."
When questioned whether Maresca would be fit to return to the dugout for the daunting trip to face Manchester City at the Etihad this Sunday, Caballero remained non-committal. He told reporters: "I don't know. I just wish for the recovery of Enzo. I believe in 1 or 2 days, he will be okay."
The illness comes at a time when Maresca is facing intense scrutiny for his tactical decisions. During the second half against Bournemouth, the stadium erupted in boos when he substituted Cole Palmer for Joao Pedro.
Despite Palmer recently returning from a groin injury, the supporters were vocal in their disapproval, with some chanting "you don't know what you're doing" toward the dugout.
Following the conclusion of round 19, Chelsea remained in 5th place with 30 points. They currently trail 4th-placed Liverpool by 2 points; however, that gap is expected to widen if the Reds secure a victory in their upcoming match against Leeds United.
