Top 5 worst team in Europe this season: Wolverhampton endure a forgettable campaign

Soccer24.net has published its list of the worst team in Europe this season, highlighting several clubs enduring difficult campaigns. Wolverhampton are struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table, while Heidenheim are facing the threat of relegation as they hover close to a return to Bundesliga 2

Football, like any sport, has both highs and lows. While some teams earn praise for their impressive performances, others have struggled to meet expectations and left their supporters disappointed.

In this article, soccer24.net presents the list of the top 5 worst team in Europe so far in the 2025/2026 season, highlighting the difficulties these clubs have faced and what the remainder of the campaign may hold for them.

Top 5 worst team in Europe this season

5. FC Metz (Ligue 1, France)

In France, Metz currently sit at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table in 18th place after a difficult campaign. The team has struggled defensively throughout the season, conceding 53 goals in 24 matches, the worst record among clubs in Europe’s top five leagues when compared by games played. With 17 defeats already this season, the prospect of relegation back to Ligue 2 is becoming increasingly likely. Their situation is a sharp contrast to last season, when Metz finished third in Ligue 2 and secured promotion after an impressive run in the second half of the campaign and a successful playoff push.

4. Hellas Verona (Serie A, Italy)

Hellas Verona once enjoyed a historic moment when they won the Serie A title in the 1984 -1985 season, finishing ahead of a Juventus side led by Michel Platini and a Napoli team featuring Diego Maradona. That remarkable achievement remains a proud memory for the club’s supporters. However, the current campaign tells a very different story. Verona have struggled throughout the season and now find themselves at the bottom of the Serie A table, with only two wins from 27 matches. Defensive problems and an inability to protect their advantage have been major issues, with the team often conceding late goals and losing control of matches in the final stages.

3. Real Oviedo (La Liga, Spain)

Real Oviedo returned to La Liga this season after a 24 year absence, but the club is already facing the threat of relegation. The newly promoted side has struggled to cope with the demands of the top flight and currently sits at the bottom of the table in 20th place. A major problem has been their lack of attacking threat, with the team scoring just 16 goals in 26 league matches, the lowest total in the competition. Much of the squad impressed in the second division but has limited experience at La Liga level. Although Oviedo recently secured a rare victory, the gap to safety remains considerable.

2. Heidenheim (Bundesliga, Germany)

Heidenheim’s rise has long been considered one of the most remarkable stories in German football. Representing a town of just 50,000 people, the club reached the Bundesliga for the first time in its history during the 2022-23 season under the leadership of Frank Schmidt, the longest serving manager in German professional football. However, by March 2026 the fairytale appears to be fading as the team faces its toughest challenge since arriving in the top flight. Heidenheim currently sits at the bottom of the Bundesliga table with only 14 points from 24 matches. A 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen in late February left them six points behind the safety zone, putting their survival hopes in serious danger.

1. Wolverhampton Wanderers (Premier League, England)

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been a regular presence in the Premier League since their return in 2018, but the past two seasons have brought increasing difficulties. After finishing 16th with 42 points in the 2024-25 campaign, the club attempted a change in direction by replacing Gary O’Neil with Vítor Pereira in December 2024. However, the situation has only worsened. Wolves now sit at the bottom of the table with just 16 points from 30 matches and are deep in a relegation battle. Pereira was dismissed in November 2025 after a winless run, with former Luton Town manager Rob Edwards taking charge soon after. Although he has overseen a slight improvement, including a recent 2-1 victory over Liverpool, the team remains 11 points away from safety. Financial pressures have also affected the squad, as the club sold key players Matheus Cunha to Manchester United for £62.5 million and Rayan Aït-Nouri to Manchester City for £31 million in the summer of 2025 in order to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and avoid potential points deductions.
